Default How long do your brakes last?

'15 Corolla S, 6-speed stick. Bought Certified Pre-Owned with 28K on it, and I've put 10K on it since.

I went in today for oil, tire rotation and to get a noise checked out (which conveniently stopped happening on the way to the dealer) and was told that I only have 4mm left on the front rotors. Service writer says I might get 5K out of what's left.

I don't brake hard. The car spends 80% of its time on the highway and on rural roads with few stops. I engine brake often.

If 40K is "normal" for brakes and the dealer didn't replace them when turning the car over between the previous owner and myself, fine (I have no way of knowing the previous owner's habits). If the dealer did replace them at 28K, what am I doing wrong to only get 10K out of a set of rotors?
