Default 2006 Highlander wonkey wiring woes

Hello all, I am working on my brothers 2006 Highlander. He recently introduced his hitch mount bicycle carrier to a telephone pole. Needless to say, the rear window got jealous and decided it would explode cuz he ain't got no friends. We scored at a local salvage yard. They had a hatch. Just the hatch, from an 06(claimed) with matching paint and plastic. Paid $450 out the door. Thank God, a used hatch for my 4runner was $1200. Everything was going fine until it came time to connect the wires. The old hatch had 3 wires going to the dome light. The new hatch wiring only has 2. The connectors are different so I just left the dome disconnected. I can swap the connectors if I have to. The only apparent issue at the moment is that the license plate lights are not lighting up.
I have searched the toyotanation forum and found a guy asking about this anomaly, he had an 07 I believe and found an 04 hatch. Alas, his post had no replies or help. Normally I would dive in with my tester and just make something work, but I am a full time student and so is he, our schedules are not entirely permissive of jerry-rigg-antics. If anyone has any input on this, or just knows what the 3rd wire is for, I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks in advance.
I have a hunch this is an earlier hatch...
ps, that is miserable, my tablet bout had a seizure just trying load any page. I like this forum much more so far.
