Default Getting the alternator back in its cradle on a 1986 Toyota pick up 22R engine

So I was replacing the brushes in the alternator on my 86 pick up-and if I ever meet any of the guys who posts YouTube videos telling you how easy it is to do I am going to have some stern words with them - and I’ve gotten to the point of putting everything back together. But for the life of me I cannot get the alternator back in its cradle. On the bottom where the retaining boat goes it’s just too narrow for the alternator to fit. I spent the better part of an hour trying to get it to go back in and I just can’t do it. Is there a trick to this, or should I just give up and have it towed to my mechanic and let him finish the job?
