Default HVAC Control Knob Broken - $1000 fix?

A few months ago, the HVAC air flow control knob on my 2009 Toyota Matrix broke, the knob which controls which vents the air goes through, ie feet, upper, defrost. I ignored it for awhile because the only times that it really bothered me was when I wished I had defrost.

I brought it into a shop and they said that a piece of plastic broke off the mode control actuator. At first, they thought they would be able to get just that part, but after some issues with Toyota they found out that they would need to get an entirely new HVAC with the price tag of about $1000. I saw the part which was broken, and a picture of it is included below.

Do you all have any ideas?

For now, I am able to control the vents manually by removing the glove box and finding the levers. That has only worked for the upper/lower vents and I can't seem to find/reach the part that controls the airflow to the windshield (for defrost). I can't justify spending $1000 just for a broken piece of plastic.
