Default 1996 camry door lock issue

I own a 1996 Camry xle. When I put the key in the driver side door lock, the passenger door unlocks, not the driver side. When I put the key in the passenger side lock, the driver side lock unlocks. What do I do to be able to unlock the drivers side door from the drivers side? Everything works normally from the passenger side.
Thanks in advance,
Bob D.

Sounds strange. I have a door lock problem too with my 2006 camry. I pulled into a car
wash, left the key in the ignition switch, got out and did the job. Took about ten minutes to
finish. Started to get back in the car and it had me locked out.!!! Had to call the wife to
bring the spare key from home. This is not good. Has anyone else had this problem?

I think I get it--under normal circumstances, your key turns a lock cylinder which does two things--one mechanism in the assembly clears a linkage allowing the door handle to unlock, and a position sensor signals the lock actuators in other doors to cycle.

Take a look at this diagram to see the mechanism I mean:

It sounds like your pass. latch is doing both of those things (as designed) and the driver's latch is only doing one, meaning half of its functionality has failed. Consider replacing the driver's door latch, which includes the actuator.

Good luck!

Ugh, had to repost this whole thing!

Your Camry has a door latch assembly that has two functions: when you turn the key, 1) a linkage moves allowing the door handle to open the latch, and 2) a position sensor signals other door lock actuators to cycle. The actuator is built into this door latch assembly (see this diagram:

It sounds to me like your passenger latch is operating normally--unlocking and sending the actuator signal--and your driver's side is only doing step 2. I'd consider removing and inspecting the door latch. It's possible a lock rod retainer--a bent plastic clip--has failed, leaving a rod dangling uselessly.

Best of luck.
