Toyota Verso /Corolla Plastic Oil Filter Housing

I have a 2011 Toyota Verso (UK). I believe its engine (1ZR-FAE) is one of the ZR series introduced in 2008. This series engines are used in a number of Toyota cars.
One feature of these engines is the plastic oil filter housing /cover /cap.

This housing can be very difficult to undo and I suspect a few replacements for damaged ones have had to be made!

Has anyone experienced this and what have they done to prevent further damage? For example, do not over tighten (20Nm torque max on fitting) and waiting for it to cool down when undoing.
