I've got a 1988 Toyota Camry. 2.0 4cyl, automatic.

When starting from a dead stop, especially when going up hills, or sometimes even on a straightaway, when I hit the gas ( - and I'm not trying to kick it in the balls either, just attempting normal acceleration), the car starts going but shudders very violently. I mean, really bad.
Like it's partially slipped out of gear or something.

Does anyone know what this might be?

The only way to make this not happen is to get up to speed VERY slowly...like, a mile-per-hour or two at a time - a problem sometimes at stoplights when I'm expected to get up to speed quickly.

It started doing this about a year and a half ago, at first only doing it when the engine was cold, but has gotten worse and does it no matter how long the car's been running.

The tires are new, pressure correct. The brakes are sound. All fluids checked and acceptable.

Any ideas??

Nothing to do with gear. It is your spark plug leads. One or two leads are burnt inside. Change the whole set, while doing so change the lead going to the coil, change plugs as well if you can, check and clean the distributor point gap. I am sure you will be alright.

It could need tune-up
