I took out the thermostat. The temp was cooler. Then, while on the highwaym the temp gauge indicates normal temp but the engine stopped. I pulled mover and found it had overheated. After cooling it down, the engine started and I put in water with engine running. I reached hone with no prob? But this is the 2nd time it happned. Please help.

how much water did you have to put in there? < it could be a loose "rubber pipe" connection and water is spraying out onto the road. squeese rubber connections that lead to the radiator and listen for water spillage. they have these after market temperature gauges on ebay pretty cheap I'm gonna invest in one myself. they work 100 % better then the stocko one supposedly.

I have managed to boil My engine a few times too. Same result as yourself, with needle still indicating okay. Until the temperature was well over the boil.
I also found that my import had been fitted with a cover which comes down over the radiator to shut off air flow in extreme cold conditions. Which meant that I cooked it when booting it up a lot.
