When I started my truck up this evening the engine sounded nearly like the muffler was off of it. i was driving it down the road and was thinking why it sounded so rough and loud, and I noticed the lights beginning to flicker a bit on the dash lights and then I noticed the temerature gage was all the way over to Hot as far right as it could go.

I had driven it for 10, maybe 15 minutes by then I pulled over and I noticed , not much but just a bit of smoke coming out of the hood area, it soon stopped.

I called the Auto parts store and spoke with a gentleman there who told me that it was probably my water pump being locked up and not to drive it.

I had a new water pump put on at the Toyota dealership I think last June (not this June of 07 , but the previos June) when I had a new timing belt put on.

I think my engine is non interference, but I was wondering if I did any serious damage or not to it.

I left it there and will have it towed in tommorow to the Toyota dealer
Also when I spoke with the dealer last , they were telling me that on my model of truck there was a Toyota recall on the head gasket , and that they would replace the head gasket for free.

I dont know if it has anything to do with this problem I have tonight, but I was told by the auto parts place that it was either the timing belt or the water pump.
Thanks to the first answerer, but could you or anybody else now tell me what is meant by "skimming the head"??

Is this going to be expensive damage?
So , you , the first answerer, think it IS the head gasket needing to be replaced??

and not the timing belt or water pump??

I had the same thing with my Nissan Langley L 1.5 it would have trouble starting after it stood for a while and later when my dad did a diagnosis he found that there was water in one of the cylinders. He told me i can still drive it for a few days but that is should be fixed as soon as possible. I did not fix it soon enough and what happened is that it stared making loud noises like the muffler was off and the temperature was realy high and steam started coming out the exhaust. The head ghasket was done and i mean well done. When a head ghasket blows the cylinders dont seal correctly with the head so some of the exhaust gas escapes from the gap between the block and the head thus making it sound very loud the steam u saw was most probable water that leaked out from one of the water ports and evaporated thats y u only saw it for a while. Since the water presure dropped after u cut the enjin all the water would evaporate and the steam would go away. Well when it comes to damage that could be a problem as the heat could have caused the head to warp and bend you might have to get the head skimmed or replaced. Hope there is no damage good luck man.
