Corollas have gears 1 - 2 - D / 3 (next to each other) - N - R - P, going up. Does anybody know when to use gears 1, 2 and 3? I basically use D all the time, but I checked that when I am on the highway the car could go at any speed but it will not change gears on the display channel above 3. It stays on 2 all the time.

The Gear D/3 is not 1 Gear. To the left is Gear D, to the right is Gear 3.

the 1/2/3 option is if you want to use the car as a semi automatic, where you can choose which gear to keep the car in.
If you leave the car in the "D" option, it's just a normal automatic and will change the gears for you.

It's a four speed auto with "D" representing the top gear when you're using it like a manual/standard

3 is overdrive for when you are hauling stuff
