I have had problems with putting this truck into gear beginning last May. Started out with problems going into 1st, 2nd, and a grinding sound trying to put it into reverse. It was nearly impossible to put into gear , so I took it to a mechanic to have them look at this. They told me that since it rolled in gear that it was the clutch needing to be replaced...but since he didnt really spend much time diagnosing it and the clutch pedal was pressing in normally and there was not a smell from it, I took it to another mechanic for a second opinion , the second opinon was that he though IF it was the clutch that it was maybe the pressure plate or something , not the whole clutch.. but the thought that it was probably the shifter bushings instead. so he replaced the shifter bushings. This didnt really help at all as the truck was still having problems going into gear.. so I took it to for a third opinion later. This time the mechanic bled the clutch fluid from the hydraulic line and t
and greased the gears .. the problem was still there afterwards, so he was then thinking that it was the linkages inside the transmission. But after two weeks of driving the truck the shifter started going into gear perfectly fine, like there was not a problem ever. And it has been working fine with no signs of problems since last September or October.

Today I went to start my truck and pressed the clutch and had it in 1st gear. The truck started rolling and would not go into gear hardly. I put it into neutral and was able to start it just fine then.

Does this sound more like a clutch assembly issue, a hydraulic issue with the slave or master cylinders or does this sound like a problem with the linkages inside the transmission??

how and why so?

Thanks very much for your answers!!!

Sounds definatly like clutch problems and since the mechanical part of the clutch such as pressure plate and disk seldom ever work a while then quit then work a while again so I suspect it's in the hydrolics. Could be that the mechanic didn't get all the air out of the system and it finally just worked itself out and now you have air in the system again. If it's not leaking fluid I would guess that the clutch master cylender is bad. They can get air in the system when the rubber cups get bad. The same thing can happen if the slave cylinder is bad but as a rule when they go bad they will leak fluid and be obvious.
