Ok for those of you who don't think i should get a pick-up *sniff, sniff* what about a 95 4 runner? And can you get those in automatic? Would this car be good for going up to the mountains?

The Toyota 4-Runner does only marginally better than trucks, getting 17 mpg in the city and 21 highway (18/22 in the 2006 model). If you want a large SUV that saves gas, I recommend the 2006 Toyota Highlander hybrid, which gets 33 mpg city and 28 highway. The gas-only version gets 22/27. A cheaper alternative would be the RAV4, which gets 24 city, 30 highway.

Now, unless you're going on a really rocky trail, an SUV isn't necessary for going up mountains. I just came back from a road trip in Utah's Valley of the Gods, and I made a 2,000-foot climb up the side of a cliff on a dirt trail using a 2005 Toyota Corolla in low gear and did just fine. One road test I saw also showed that front-wheel drive vehicles with traction control actually perform better on snow than their all-wheel drive counterparts. Another thing to consider is that if you're in a lighter vehicle, you're actually less likely to get stuck in something. Your only consideration is for rocks which necessitate sufficient ground clearance.

If you're looking to maximize the combination of fuel-efficiency and cargo space, I would recommend the Honda Fit or Scion xA, five-door hatchbacks with personality and flexible seating configurations. Both get 31 mpg city, 38 highway. And of course, your most fuel-efficient option is the Toyota Prius, 60 city, 51 highway.

"Good Gas Mileage" and "Truck" and / or "SUV" just don't go together.

You have to pick one or the other.....

Unless you want to buy a Honda CRV or something like that....but no man worth his salt would be caught dead driving in that emasculating peice of garbage.

If you're going to the mountains, gas mileage might be crap..burns a hole in your purse with gas pulling 3.25 regular here in California

An 11 year old Toyota...good luck. You'll be spnding so much money on expensive replacement parts that you won't even notice the gas mileage. Get a clue.
