It has to have some way to hold it in place. There is approximately, one to two feet of area between the cup holder and the car's interior dashboard area. It used to be the car's shift area. It was previously moved to the steering column

If it is hard plastic or metal in this area this is what I did...I bought a cup holder/food holder for the are you are talking about by modifying its shape with a knife and then i have had sucess with two different options. Attaching suction cups on all four corners with gorrila glue or velcro with hot glue. These are ideas that i'm sure you can play with or modify...just food for thought
