The Auto part is the clue to the problem. Autos (in UK anyway) will only start if they are not in gear - must be in Park or Neutral. I have a VW Auto and had the same problem. There is a switch on the gear box which only makes contact when P or N is selected. On my car the switch was loose so never made contact. You will need a book to on the Landcruiser to show you where to find the switch and whether or not it can be replaced without removing the engine. If engine removal is required then it is probably simpler to just short out the switch - the trouble with this is that you would then be able to start the engine in drive which would do the starter motor no favours.

Could indeed be the start inhibitor that's supposed to prevent it starting unless it's in Park or Neutral. Had that problem on an old Ford once, proved the point by VERY carefully juggling the selector lever and found it would work with the lever a couple of thou' out of position. On that one, at least, it was just a question of adjusting the switch which was on the outside of the gearbox.

Good luck!

If you going to do what ramsey said make sure that the end of the metal you are holding is insulated, starter motors take a heavy current.

I was going to say starter, but never mind! Is it making any funny noises when you try to start it? It may be some kind of short, I would take it to a Toyota dealer and they can hook it up to a diagnostic machine and tell you what's wrong.

there's an energiser wire (thin wire) goes to your starter from the ignition switch. This could be broken or disconnected. Try getting a heavy bit of metal (cold chisel) and bridge between the heavy positive wire and the thin energiser wire terminals on the back of the starter. WARNING. using light metal or wire to bridge could burn your fingers. If your engine doesn't turn over - It's serious. (if batteries are ok)

yeah check the fuel supply, an old fuel filter can decrease fuel pressure dramatically. Not likely to be the fuel pump. Try using easystart spray in the air intake, this sometimes helps. Also check spark plugs if its a petrol, give em a coationg of wd-40 to drive out moisture that may stop it firing. If its a diesel, try using the manual pump in the engine bay to force more diesel into the engine.

Assuming that you don't have an airlock in the fuel line, and it's cranking, try a new set of glow plugs. That might do it, a cold diesel will not start at this time of year if the glow plugs are knackered.

A car needs three things to start - 1) fuel, 2) spark, 3) air. Assuming your engine is turning over when you turn the key you are missing one of these. This is a diesel; you haven’t run out at some point have you?
